If you’re not sure what FTP is, we recommend reading this article first.

If you are trying to connect to your hosting’s FTP server and not having much luck, you might be caught on the FTP security lock!

First of all, check your FTP credentials are valid. To work through this guide, you will also need access to ‘My Black Owl‘.

On the right hand sidebar of your control panel, you will see the status of your current FTP lock. In most circumstances it will look like this:

While FTP is locked, you will be unable to connect to the FTP server of that hosting account using any credentials. This is implemented for security reasons, and we fully support our vendor’s platform in this way. FTP can be unsecure, so this FTP lock is a great way of keeping your site safe from the bad guys.

To unlock FTP to upload/download, just click the ‘Unlock FTP’ button. By default, this will unlock FTP for one day (24 hrs). Once you have finished your work, we recommend re-locking FTP – although if you use a secure password, your FTP connection is likely to remain secure.
